on soma ep warszaw based duo mech installs four tracks in the cryptic reduced style of thomas brinkmann’s max/ernst series. the guys deliver an audio work production on resopal that hovers among forms such as techno, minimalism, and ambient. on all four tracks the elements are limited but the output bounces and rattles within - moving and exploring into more experimental zones of minimalism like plastikman, brinkmann, or former mille plateaux. a damn solid four tracker whether you know the math or not.

mono junks dum records has been dictating trends in the world of minimalistic techno since the 1990s, and its 34th release is as special as any. this one comes from label boss kimmo rapatti aka mono junk vs mesak, who is better known as fellow finn, tatu metsätähti, aka one half of mr velcto fastener and someone who has released on dexter & steffis klakson. together the pair serve up three mixes of their jam and an additional track. title track deep in my mind is a paranoid techno cut with freaky vocal riffs repeating the title as gurgling synth lines and sleek drums rumble below. twitchy synths and high pressure perc add to the hypnotic effect, and overall its easy to see this one making for some perfectly weird dance floor moments. the mix by mono junk is completely the opposite: in his hands it is a beat-less, serene and beautifully styled electro cut that takes you deep into brain soothing space. the electro mind version is then a full on electro jam, with plenty of aqueous synths and fluid lines all squiggling along in classic detroit style. final track sysdrum is back to the raw, with angsty drum lines, crisp and slapping snares and oodles of reverb all making for a brain frying trip.

heard on “melancholia” are interpretations of honzo’s subconscious visions of life. the intense compositions are made up of drones, noises and distorted beats moving in and out of the frame. on opener “orientalism” said elements blend with hi-hat brushes, brassy synth pads, sci-fi noises and distant human voices evoking islam’s “adhan” (call to prayer). the theme contemplates over alienation caused by western accounts of “orientalism”, soaked in “hüzün” (the turkish term for melancholia). on a2 a rework of “moral masochism” is provided by the mysterious shadows outfit, starting with a distorted guitar over a slow and gritty rhythmic backbone which gradually turns into a chaotic high-intensity acid jam on the ep’s most dance floor suitable cut. on the flipside, “lovesickness” presents a broken kick rhythm periodically flipped by toms and accompanied by a disorienting hi-hat rhythm, ghostly strings and sporadic human moans – all resulting in a tribal mood, recalling a ceremony, perhaps a quest for a saviour from the blue temper? b2 presents the “moral masochism” original. again a distorted guitar plays over a slow rhythm, but compared to the remix, the original’s intensity is introverted, contemplating over melancholia’s effect of deriving gratification from self-inflicted moral humiliation. ambient closer “emptiness” explores a cold state with such an encapsulating airiness that it feels like a close account of another person’s mood down to the impression of their breath. arpeggiated synth noises appear from a distance representing increasing pressure from the outside world without ever suppressing the state of mind. as a result, “emptiness” sums up the state of melancholia experienced as a mood rather than the effect of a cause.

lady blacktronika shows two totally different sides to her character with her return to bass culture via a potent ep full of deliciously dark, bass-heavy productions placed side by side with more soulful explorations of the house sound. following the ‘all in vain’ ep, which landed earlier this year, lady blacktronika comes correct once again with a collection of four of the finest quality cuts. our introduction to the ep is a thorough dip in the deep end of tech house, with the marauding ‘it rains’. full of darkness, the venomous track stomps along with a powerful, darkside bassline and razor-sharp percussion. high-pitched keys add to the malevolent flavour of this raw cut. after that, we get a more measured, yet mysterious and unsettling slice of minimal funk. ‘no good’ is a hypnotic trip inside lady blacktronika’s murky world with snarling synth lines, clever percussion, eerie fx and a naughty little b-line. on the flip we have retro-inspired ‘call my name’, with a very old school feel as the 808 gets a proper workout in tandem with a familiar female spoken-word vocal layered over the top. this is bound to send the dance floor into uproar with its killer vocal sample. finally ‘set out your luv’ gives the ep a heady ending, light airy pads are placed alongside a grooving bassline, soulful vocals, diamond-cut beats and squelchy effects to create a lush, dreamy soundscape which will get those hips moving….

* this is the seventh surgeon album.
* -while exploring new production techniques using old and unlikely hardware, the results were so unusual that i really had the sense that these pieces of equipment didn t actually create these sounds, rather they were in fact some kind of elaborate reception device that allowed me to tune into transmissions from distant galaxies. the music i could hear was actually the received transmissions of pop hits from those distant galaxies that were being played on their radio stations. i quickly recorded all that i could before losing the transmission.
* i consulted with dr andrew read, the astrophysicist with whom i recorded guitar treatments in 1999. he has worked on the discovery of the most distant galaxies and astronomical objects in the universe. together we came up with a possible list of where these musical transmissions may have come from.

nonkeen is a project led by nils frahm (erased tapes) alongside sebastian singwald and frederic gmeiner. nils frahm and gmeiner attended the same school in hamburg. a mutual interest in sound recording brought them together and they began producing their own radio show which featured sounds from school, the voices of their teachers and recordings of their own instruments, all recorded on tape machines for kids. the double vinyl release includes a download code.
fusing forces from norway and ghana for crosstown rebels is djuma soundsystem & yann coppier feat. king ayisoba, with the expertly crafted anyimo a african infused techno beast of a track, featuring remixes from dj and producer ibadan kingpin jerome sydenham and the illusive johnny aux who brings his signature acid house sound. king ayisoba originates from ghana and has been sharing his modern day twist on kologo music all over the world. norwegian in origin, djuma soundsystem has been creating music and touring the world for over a decade on labels such as rebirth, eskimo and noir. the two creative forces have combined here to create a truly unique afro-infused head turner of track with king ayisoba superb ghanaian vocals. the legendary jerome sydenham delivers two floor-filling interpretation of the original, both vocal an ibadan dub, hike the tempo and hit the floor running. also, johnny aux delivers a rib rattling techno take on the original with devastating effect

a:g delivers his vinyl debut on aquavit, with something for both house and techno heads! with the title track dobra mare being a journey into endlessly deep dub techno soundscapes with a strong rolling bottom end for the darker rooms, the flipside offers a homage to the classic roland tr707 drum machine with the percussion sounds we all know so well, accompanied by a big bass lead to remember the next day. both tracks also get proper remix action: label boss robert solheim goes deep and progressive for dobra mare, and icelandic wonder boy viktor birgiss does a melodic deep dub house approach to i wish i had a 707.
